(Formal Title: Coordinator of Communications Design)

POSITION AVAILABLE: One regular position, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year, on the Oceanside Campus beginning in October, 2007. The person selected for this position may be assigned to any of the three district sites during any hours of operation.



STARTING SALARY: $5,428.75 per month and full benefit package which includes employee and dependent medical and dental plans, $100,000 life insurance and income protection insurance, as well as membership in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).



REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Communication, design and coordinate production and printing of class schedules and the college catalog; compile, organize and coordinate input from a wide variety of sources to produce publications for the District; edit and proofread copy; design and illustrate four-color covers; take digital photos; select paper stock and ink colors; produce camera-ready artwork; establish effective timelines with printers. Work with the Public Information staff, college faculty and other college staff to research, develop, design and direct publication of materials for the recruitment of students and staff, and for the promotion of a wide variety of college programs and events, including newsletters, programs, brochures, flyers and components of college-wide information systems. Develop specifications and coordinate with Purchasing and Material Management for District printing and publishing bids for class schedules and college catalog. Confer with District personnel and committees; act as liaison between off-campus printers and the college. Develop and publish institutional web pages for presentation to the college and to the public. Provide technical expertise and advice to faculty, staff and administrators concerning graphics work requests; clarify information, formats and design possibilities. Operate a variety of computer hardware and software used to design and prepare graphics, illustrations and written materials for printed and electronic publication and other campus uses, such as campus signs and computer networks. Perform related duties as assigned.



KNOWLEGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop; DreamWeaver, Microsoft Word and Excel; principles of marketing and advertising design; methods, practices, terminology and procedures used in print design; type families; colors, inks and paper stock used in printing; appropriate electronic design tools; digital cameras; website architecture, HTML, HTML editors, web publishing procedures; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; record keeping techniques. Ability to design and produce four-color artwork for District publications; coordinate, design, and produce the College catalog, class schedules and other college publications; estimate costs and analyze cost effectiveness of pieces prior to production; operate a computer and a variety of software packages; use a digital camera; set up and meet schedules and timelines; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work independently with little direction; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; maintain records and prepare reports.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in art, communications, graphic arts or related major and two years of directly related work experience, OR an associate degree in art, communications, graphic arts or related major and six years of directly related work experience.

Samples must have been printed; computer laser print and photo copies are not acceptable. Samples will not be returned unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is provided or applicant makes arrangements with the Human Resources Office to pick up samples after the position has been filled. PHYSICAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION: Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; subject to frequent to constant visual stress, and repetitive use of hands, shoulders, wrists and forearms for extended periods of time while using a computer keyboard and/or mouse; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as-needed to conduct district business.



EMOTIONAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.



WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION: Primarily busy, indoor office environment; intermittent to frequent contact with and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone; occasional exposure to impatient, angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals; may be required to work during day and/or evening hours including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis.
